What is a Low Temperature Plasma Sterilizer?

A low-temperature plasma sterilizer is a specialist sterilizer in which all organisms (such as bacteria, viruses, and spores) are killed on medical devices and equipment using the sterilizing power of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2) and the low-temperature plasma. In comparison with high-temperature sterilizers (i.e., autoclaves), plasma sterilizers offer sterilization at a relatively low temperature, in general at temperatures below 50 degrees Celsius. This makes the plasma sterilizers highly appealing devices to users and manufacturers of heat and moisture-sensitive devices.

Working model of Low Temperature Plasma Sterilizer

The sterilization cycle in a low-temperature plasma sterilizer includes the following stages:
  • Pre-treatment/Preparation - The instruments are cleaned, dried, and loaded into the sterilizer chamber.
  • Vacuum Phase - The air has been evacuated from the chamber.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor Injection Phase - A specified volume of liquid H₂O₂ is vaporized in the sterilizer and then is injected into the chamber.
  • Diffusion Phase - The vapor contacts all surfaces of the instruments due to diffusion.
  • Gas Phase - RF (Radiofrequency) energy is utilized to convert the vaporized H₂O₂ into gas. Gas is a high-energy state of matter, which produces free radicals that kill living organisms (like bacteria, viruses, and spores).
  • Ventilation and Termination Phase - The sterilizer is ventilated, and the residual hydrogen peroxide has been broken down into water vapor and oxygen, which are non-hazardous by-products.

Features of Sterile Safequip & Chemicals Limited’s Low Temperature Plasma Sterilizer

  • Operating Temperature - Allows for the sterilization of heat-sensitive medical devices such as endoscopes, catheters, and plastic items.
  • Cycle Time - Sterilization cycles can be completed in 45-75 minutes, depending on load.
  • Non-Toxic By-Product - Breaks down to water and oxygen, meaning there are no residuals left over from the sterilization process. Eco-Friendly - No toxic by-products or need for chemical disposal systems for the end-user to deal with.
  • User-friendly Design - Touch screen operation with automated validation and documentation of each sterilization cycle for traceability.
  • Compact Design - Many models have a small footprint and are ideal for use in hospitals, clinics, dental offices, and research laboratories.
